Podracer Prototype

Blueprint scripting

In this project, my goal was to create a vehicle actor blueprint. After watching Mandalorian Season 2, I was highly inspired to make a speeder bike actor and a spaceship actor. Spaceship was too intensive for my PC so I decided to only do the speeder bike. I wanted to learn how to set up physics components, script movement behavior and setup for vehicles and create something closer to older Star Wars racing games.

Since this was my first time working on a vehicle prototype, I wanted to watch some tutorials on creating hover vehicles. I also got references from games like Star Wars Podracing and Destiny.

I started by using a third-person template since my initial idea was to have the vehicle be mountable. During later stages that proved too much for my PC as well so I had to scrap that idea though I would love to revisit the idea.

I created the vehicle actor and set up the initial movement setup for forward vectors and left and right rotation which was assigned to both controller and PC inputs. Once I had that done I had a very basic controllable actor.

After a few tries, I managed to get a hover component working with reasonable physics values without having the vehicle fly into the atmosphere or keep crashing on the ground. The first version with hover component can be seen here - https://twitter.com/raaghav_datta/status/1404014133561860103
